I am First Nations and live in British Columbia, Canada. I am very disappointed that the media does not report accurately about salmon farming on the West Coast of North America. We are Kitasoo/Xai'Xais people and have been salmon farming since 1987. There is a great story of hard work, pride and self-support which has virtually gone unnoticed by the public. My community has seen the unemployment rate drop from 90% to 40% directly related to salmon farming. We work on the farms (some of us in management positions) and in the processing plant that sat idle for most of the years before we started farming. We have a comprehensive environmental management system in place, run by us, the Kitasoo, to ensure that there is very little or no impact on our resources. Many environmental groups, including F.A.N. and the David Suzuki Foundation have set out to destroy our sustainability. These groups hide behind outdated information. We do not want to be supported by government money any more and stand to lose out on this wish, because of a few, special interest groups.
